Senior Linux Systems Engineer

• Operate and maintain Debian-based production infrastructure.

• Maintain and improve shared hosting, email hosting and VPS platforms.

• Build and operate systems for 1984's new public cloud.

• Automate provisioning, configuration and recurring operational tasks.

• Improve monitoring, alerting and observability.

• Diagnose and resolve complex production incidents.

• Carry out performance analysis and system tuning.

• Improve security hardening and operational resilience.

• Design and maintain deployment, backup and recovery procedures.

• Reduce manual operational work through automation.

• Maintain and improve Linux-based services and infrastructure.

• Contribute to architectural and technical decisions.

• Work closely with storage, networking and software engineers.

• Document systems, procedures and operational knowledge.

We are looking for substantial hands-on experience administering Linux in production environments.

Strong knowledge and practical experience with:

• Debian GNU/Linux.

• Linux system administration and troubleshooting.

• systemd and Linux service management.

• Linux networking.

• Filesystems and storage.

• Performance analysis and optimisation.

• Shell scripting.

• Python.

• Configuration management and automation.

• Monitoring and observability.

• Backup and recovery.

• Security hardening.

• Production incident response.

You should be comfortable working with and troubleshooting:

• Processes, memory and CPU utilisation.

• Filesystems and block devices.

• Networking, routing and sockets.

• Logs and system diagnostics.

• cgroups and resource management.

• Kernel and userspace behaviour.

• Services and dependencies.

• Production performance problems.

Experience with some of the following is highly desirable:

• KVM / QEMU.

Experience operating shared hosting or email infrastructure is a significant advantage.

We do not expect candidates to know every technology listed above. We are primarily looking for someone with deep Linux knowledge, strong troubleshooting skills and extensive experience operating production infrastructure.

Formal education and certifications are useful but are not requirements. Practical experience and technical ability matter more.
