Lead Teacher of Icelandic as an additional / foreign language - Starts August 2026

The International Department of Landakotsskóli is seeking a qualified Icelandic teacher with extensive experience of curriculum organisation and development to oversee teaching of Icelandic as a foreign language and Icelandic as an additional language to students at the International Department of Landakotsskóli. This is an exciting opportunity to develop an innovative programme.

The successful candidate will prepare curriculum materials and organise teaching for students from grades 1-10 who are studying through the medium of English. Students will be taught at two levels – those who have prior knowledge of Icelandic will follow the “additional language” programme, whilst those who are just starting to learn Icelandic will follow the “foreign language” programme. This will be a new programme for our school and so the candidate will be responsible for selecting suitable teaching materials and ensuring teaching meets the needs of all students.

It is expected that the lead teacher will teach half of the classes and will provide curriculum and support to a paired teacher who is teaching the parallel class in each grade level.

The position is suitable for all genders.

All those who are employed at Landakotsskóli must authorize the collection of information from the criminal record.

Landakotsskóli is an independent compulsory school for grades 1–10, with an additional department for five-year-olds as well as an after-school program. Around 360 students attend the school, across two departments: an Icelandic department which follows the Icelandic national curriculum and an international department where teaching takes place in English and follows the Cambridge International Curriculum. About 50 teachers with diverse backgrounds work at the school, along with 30 other staff members. We are seeking someone who would thrive in this diverse cultural environment.

The school’s mission is to provide students with an outstanding elementary education. It offers ambitious instruction in core subjects, strong arts education, and a wide range of language learning opportunities. The student and teacher community is international, and the school is characterized by a positive working atmosphere, ambition, and excellent staff.

Landakotsskóli is a non-profit institution governed by a board.
