Mechatronics Engineer
Laki Power, based in Reykjavík, develops a range of LKX products for monitoring high-voltage transmission lines, built on a patented power-harvesting technology that draws energy from the line. We have customers across four continents and closed a Series A round in September 2026 led by the NATO Innovation Fund.
We are looking for a mechatronics engineer to join the team developing the LKX-DRONE and contribute to the mechanical design of the drone, its docking and charging interface, and overall hardening of the solution.
The LKX-DRONE is a drone-based monitoring system for power grids, built to fully automate tower inspection, preventive maintenance, post-storm inspection, wildfire surveillance and security reconnaissance. We did extensive prototype testing in 2026, including docking on a live 220 kV line, and are now redesigning it for a commercial launch in 2027.
- Mechanical design of the drone: taking the current prototype to a smaller, lighter production design.
- Docking mechanics and the charging interface: adapting Laki’s power-harvesting platform to interface with and charge the drone.
- Environmental hardening and testing: a system that works in harsh weather, with electronics that withstand the EMI of a high-voltage line.
- Prototyping and field tests.
- A degree in mechatronics, mechanical or electrical engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Hands-on experience in developing robotics or similar hardware.
- Solid experience and knowledge of CAD software.
- Experience with drone development is a big plus.
- Able to work independently and take ownership, while being a strong team player.
- Ability to communicate in English in a professional setting.
