Head of Product Engineering - R&D - Embedded

Want to have a direct impact on patient's health and life and cut down healthcare costs? Then join our growing team, where we are pioneering healthcare solutions to combat one of the most critical challenges faced by hospitals today using AI and deep-tech technology.

As Head of Product Engineering, you are the technical owner of our medical device. This is a hands-on leadership role: you write production firmware and you own the product — its architecture, its technical roadmap, the build-versus-buy calls, and the relationships with the partners who help us build it. You'll connect the dots between hardware, firmware, and the cloud, set the technical direction and work closely with our partners.

Applicants must be willing to use the numerous AI tools we use in development and have experience working with Claude Code, Codex and more.
Salary based strongly on competences. Must have positive attitude. Good stock options plans. All applications are confidential.

Own the Product, Hands-On: Set and drive the technical roadmap for the device. Make the architecture and build-versus-buy decisions, translate clinical and market needs into requirements, and stay personally in the code — you lead by building, not just by directing. You are the person who knows how the whole product fits together and is accountable for it.

Develop and Optimize the Firmware: Design, write, and optimize embedded C firmware on STM32 (Arm Cortex-M) under a real-time operating system (ThreadX / Azure RTOS), within a regulated IEC 62304 software lifecycle. This spans camera and sensor integration, peripheral drivers, secure connectivity, edge AI, and system integration — under real-time, memory, and power constraints. Development is focused on STM ecosystem such as STM32N6 and STM´s development ecosystem.

Prototyping, Bring-Up and Verification: Drive the device from concept to production — board bring-up, integrating microcontrollers, sensors (camera, time-of-flight, proximity) and actuators, and supporting hardware/software integration in the lab. Own rigorous testing to validate functionality, reliability, and safety, with unit and integration testing (e.g. Ceedling/Unity) and CI.

Lead Partner and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Be our senior technical voice to external PCBA/manufacturing and product-development partners — driving hardware design, design-for-manufacture, and bring-up — and work across the team with software developers, mechanical engineers, regulatory, and healthcare professionals to keep the whole product coherent.

Quality and Compliance: Make sure the product is designed and documented to meet medical-device standards (IEC 62304, ISO 13485, MDR/FDA) and security best practice, with the traceability our regulated environment demands.

Menntunar- og hæfniskröfur

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related field. Experience has higher leverage than degrees.

Embedded Depth: Deep, demonstrable expertise in embedded C on Arm Cortex-M (STM32 or equivalent) — RTOS, interrupts, DMA, low-power design — plus the hardware fluency to read schematics and datasheets and debug at the hardware/firmware boundary with scope and logic analyzer.

Product Ownership: A proven track record of owning a product or major subsystem end-to-end — making the technical calls, setting direction, and shipping. You can hold the roadmap and the code at the same time.

Sensors and Connectivity: Experience integrating sensors and peripherals over I²C, SPI, and UART, and implementing secure wireless connectivity (WiFi/BLE) and device-to-cloud communication.

Tooling: Proficient in Python for scripting, test automation, and data analysis. Familiarity with the AWS platform (e.g. AWS IoT Core, Lambda, S3) is a plus. Experience with Git (GitLab/GitHub) for collaboration, code management, and documentation.

Experience and Maturity: Senior-level hands-on embedded systems experience, preferably in healthcare, medtech, or a related industry. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities and a creative approach to technical challenges. Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a proven record of working effectively across interdisciplinary teams and with external partners. We'll review all applications.

Bonus Qualifications: Experience deploying ML inference on microcontrollers or edge NPUs. Hands-on experience taking a regulated medical device through MDR/FDA. High-volume manufacturing experience. Comfort with Agile and test-driven development.
